Two stroke oil in diesel engines
« on: May 09, 2016, 12:58:33 PM »
Found this interesting article on another forum

http://www.fuelexpert.co.za/2-stroke-oil-in-diesel-technical-study.php

Basically it concludes:

The results of the study support a view that the practice of dosing diesel with 2-stroke oil is surprisingly ineffective in terms of lubricity and cetane improvements. Engine performance, fuel consumption and emissions were also unchanged; however the use of 2-stroke oil in diesel is potentially harmful to modern diesel injection equipment. Trace amounts of zinc, an element which is found in most 2-stroke oils, are well known to cause injector nozzle fouling and the study measured high levels of injector fouling when the test engine was running on diesel dosed with 2-stroke oil. While the oil industry may not mind the additional revenue from the sale of 2-stroke oil with each tank of diesel, this study demonstrated that it is not in the best interest of the user to do so.

Good read Dave..I use 200ml per tank when I remember to do it...it does make the injectors quieter, but i might stop using it I think.
Cheers Richie.

It might have worked in the older motors but I was always to worried to use it even in the 2004 Patrol 3L.

This just confirms that I made the right decision.

When I used to use it in the old 4.2TD Patrol it certainly made the old mechanical pump a lot quieter, as for any other benefits I have no idea.

These modern fuels are light on in Ash and not good for injectors.
Too "dry".
these modern pumps/injectors, Just run an injector cleaner through once a month.
and engine flush around every 20k.

As long as you use the basic. cheap 2 str not Synth or Marine.

Just check on the number of modern injectors in service dep, tments rubbish boxes and ask yourself why.

Seriously? Did you even read the scientific study above?

No Dave.

just 50 odd yrs of usage by self and a lot of others,
2 str is proven. in practice. over a lot of yrs over a lot of engines by a lot of people.
Regardless of what "scientific" papers say.
I know I'm old fashioned but there's a lot of others out there too with a lot of experience who don't disagree.

basically it boils down to what the individual says. believes. does.

The engines work either way. And should be given a shot of injector cleaner once a month. and de sludging every 20 k or so.
Regardless.
We both happy with our choices. so.
No harm done either way.
People make their minds up, either way. according to themselves.yes.

See ya.

No Dave.

Everybody is entitled to their opinions but I would suggest some facts are hard to ignore.

Correct Dave. Everybody is entitled to their opinions
Every week there is a scientific study relating to something being good or bad.
Fats, red wine, smoking, global warming etc
We are all still able to make our own mind up as to wether we wish to believe or not
Some studies will contradict other studies so if Macka feels that it is beneficial to his diesel who are we to argue
Once upon a time we loved lead in out fuel, how things have changed

I used 2stroke oil , in my Hilux @ 200/1 for a extended period , honestly I didn't notice any difference at all .

Don't believe it did any harm , sold the Lux after I bought the Dmax , it's still going .

As long as you run a Diesel additive/injector cleaner through every 10/20k or so. it shouldn't do any damage.
And it does quieten my D-Max Donk on startup and running.

I reckon that Isuzu, being the biggest manufactures of diesel engine in the world would probably have an opinion on the subject...of course others would know better but maybe it's worth getting their opinion on the subject...you know...just to see what they have to say about it...I reckon I would place my bets on one answer out of yes or no. Guess which one  :laughing7:

Not sure why, after reading the independent report\study, anybody would still bother to add 2 stroke oil to their diesel.

We also now know, despite some people being  conspiracy theorists and preferring to make up their own minds, that the world is in fact not flat.........anymore.
