Title: Alloy welding required
Post by: ajm on Jun 18, 2020, 12:31:32 PM
Folks, I need someone to do a small spot weld on an engine head so that it can deal the cylinder. It's for a kohler mower engine. The groove requiring attention is approximately 10mm long. Hopefully it's clear to see in the attached pic. We are at Woodford, north west of Brisbane. Anybody know someone who could do this job?(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200618/7ab6581ca9952031295273845cf1ccad.jpg)

This place is at Slacks Creek and specialises in that sort of stuff.  Not quite at Woodford though.

It's a start. I'll look them up. Cheers.

Just be careful that you use someone who knows what they are doing.

Aluminium alloys differ in many and wonderful ways.

Alloy wheels used to have a nice little additive that turns them into a firework when you try to weld them.

Some engine components have some very specific alloys that may or may not weld or may deform.

I used to think welding cast iron was a B$#tch, but aluminium alloys make that look easy.

Good luck

Thanks valkie. If I can't find someone up this way, I'll run it down to slacks creek next week.

Guessing most places that do cylinder heads should be able to do it.  Should be a cylinder head place around Caboolture area or north side of Brisbane.  Remember getting the head off an old Mazda welded around the water jacket, valves redone etc at Geebung many years ago.

If you can't find anyone local, Craig at CSF does know what he's doing. He does head and block repairs and a lot of alloy repairs like magnesiun side covers etc for the local motorbike shops,

I might call csf first to see whether they think it's doable and to get an idea of budget.
