Title: Connection issues with the www.ozisuzu.com.au web server
Post by: yvesjv on Mar 20, 2020, 03:35:34 AM
Hi all,

Antone else having connection issues with the www.ozisuzu.com.au web server?
In the last few days it's become hit and miss for me, it timeouts then reconnects and the cycle rstarts again.

Though ping to the server shows no drops.
I think the ip address is shared between multiple companies.

Thanks for the heads up.

I have had another gent suggest the same thing to me privately and I naturally assumed it was at his end as no one else seemed to have the issue!!

But obviously it is at our end.

We are on a shared server, that up until now has had plenty of bandwidth for those of us that are on it. Looking at the technical graphs they supply we have been well and truly within all limits 99.9% of the time.

Ill get in touch with them and see if there is something that can be done. It may be time that we have out grown our current arrangement and we need to move onto a better arrangement.
It may also be because there are so many people working at home or something along those lines, as we are on a US based server.

Either way Ill endeavor to stop it happening  :icon_thumleft:

I just had a quick look at the nerdy stuff on our server and besides one tiny spike the users are well and truly within the servers limits.

However it is showing some faults over the last 7 days which Id suggest is the issue.

Ill give them a call when I get a chance and see if they can tell me why this is happening......no doubt they will blame the coronavirus  :evil6:

Ive just done a little bit of maintenance.

I need to know if it is our server erroring or if it is the current issue most of us are having at the moment where we are getting massive spikes of the ISP's getting overwhelmed.

If anyone gets an error now can you please take note of the error and post it here.

An example would be "Internal server error 500".

Thanks.

I've been having the same  problem for about a week. Sometimes it will connect after a long period of trying, other times it times out.   I have no difficulty connecting to other forums and my download speeds and ping times are normal.
If it does connect to the Ozisuzu forum home I then experience the same issue when I select one of the boards.   Very hit and miss.
EG just now 0920 ( EST) it took 3 attempts before I  was connected

This is the messaage I get.

This site can’t be reachedwww.ozisuzu.com.au took too long to respond.
Try:

Checking the connection
Checking the proxy and the firewall
Running Windows Network Diagnostics
ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT

I ran Windows Network Diagnostics and this is what it tells me>

Hi Danny
I tried to email you, but that failed.
What I found was that if you went to thr root url the https cert was served and all ok.
But if you came directly to sub url folder from a proxy the cert was not served.
This appears to be now fixed.

Cheers

Thanks for the info gents.

I’m wondering if there is suddenly an issue with the https side of things.

Mark what email address did you use?

The place is falling apart ;)

Danny,

Ran a couple of tests and it is hit and miss.

Miss:
$ openssl s_client -connect www.ozisuzu.com.au:443

And success:

I wish it did help but I am not tech savvy enough to really understand it.

I was just on the phone to our server support and he looked at the errors and he just said one shows that it didnt connect and the other shows that it did!!

However he did do quite a few server diagnostics and checks and our server is running fine and well with in its limits. We may get slow downs when there are 100 or more users online at once but that is very rare.

He checked our SSL side of things and all that is also working perfectly.

The only thing he did discover was that I had an old version of PHP software on our server so we updated that to the latest and greatest so maybe that was an issue?

He also suggested due to the nature of our forums software some users may experience issues if they do not clear their browser cache as we recently updated the software and it can cause issues.

So even though I think there must be an issue at our end (too many people having the problem for it not to be) I do ask that those of you having problems please clear your browser cache and see if that helps in any way?

Thanks for everyones patience with this while I work out whats happening!

Do they have some sort of loadbalancer or firewall in front of the IP 166.62.6.79?
I tried to do a simple telnet test and that failed
$ telnet www.ozisuzu.com.au 443
Trying 166.62.6.79...
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection timed out

Interesting when I try it from a test site in Europe, it doesn't fail... try testing 443 (https) at

I have no idea sorry. All I know is that the IP you have posted is to our shared server. I can do a ping from here no problems?

Sorry Danny, ping are looking good at the moment.
Looked up if they have a few servers at that IP and yes, quite a few https://securitytrails.com/list/ip/166.62.6.79

Something else is going on and that's tricky when the web server is supported by someone else in the US or Singapour...

I think the guys and I can keep digging when we can.  ;)

Thanks yeh Im pretty sure Godaddy's shared servers have around 1500 customers on them.

Im still leaning towards our SSL arrangement which I think is a UK company, although the server tech guy looked at it and said it all seems fine. He suggested its not something that is random...it either works or it is not working at all times.

Hopefully someone more tech savvy will nut it out for us!!

Has anyone performed any upgrades/maintenance recently?
Turning on the firefox developer tools appears to show the random stall occurring when performing a http get request for a document
Also occurred when performing a http post...
You'll need a webserver developer to troubleshoot where the issues are...

Out of curiosity, people having issues, please post who your internet provider is, there maybe a trend with a provider not having enough capacity with the increase in isolation.
I am with Telstra at both home and mobile and haven't experienced any issues yet.

Our forums software was updated quite a while ago. Everything has been working great up until this week.
Can you please try another browser and see if you get the same errors?

Good idea, this is what the server tech support man suggested also.

I also use telstra (wifi nbn) and even though at has been very very congested at times, pages do load eventually!! There has been a really obvious slow down since all the restrictions have come into place.

Hmm thats a totally different issue. I do have the tapatalk prompt turned on so thats normal but not being able to upload images is not normal. We do have a 3rd party image uploader installed into our forums software that can be a bit dodgy at times and our in house image uploader has a lot of size restrictions.

Thanks for all the help.

I am thinking it is not as bad as I first thought. The original gent who contacted seems to have solved his issues with a cache clean on is browser and we dont appear to be getting inundated with people having the slow down problem. I am starting to wonder if Chris1988 and the server tech guy is onto the actual issue.

Just for the record we are not getting any errors in our forums software log or on our servers log. We are getting our usual amount of traffic and log ins per day.

But lets keep an eye on it.

I have had issues the last few days : timed out, 15 seconds to load , get the S#$ts and close the window ,
when i reopen the site , if i have to log on again , the unread posts are gone .
I'm using firefox , a month or 6 week old nbn conection with internode ( iinet ? )
started fine today but after 2 unread posts , timed out on the third , now slow again
Did a cache clean before logging on again, no trouble with any other site .  :BangHead:

Are all the people using firefox able to test on chrome or another browser just as a process of elimination? We may have a compatibility issue with firefox?

A quick google suggests firefox is having a lot of time out issues. Many people are asking how to increase the timeo out time.
Id take a punt here and say maybe due to the network congestion issues the world is having at the moment perhaps browsers that have a smaller time out limit are in fact timing out before the nescasary items are loading??

I am of course guessing!! Im off to download firefox and see if I can get the issue.

Firefox............timed out cannot connect with server ( after clearing cache )

Chrome.......comes up quickly, but can't login

xcvator, do you get errors logging in with chrome, like a timeout of something like that?
When chrome loads, if you try again in firefox or edge, does it still fail to connect?

Hi Danny,

I'm currently logged in using both Chrome and Firefox simultaneously. No issues evident, and both browsers responding with same speed.

I have not experienced more or less time outs with Firefox across the board. Posted this using Firefox, but I usually use Chrome to work on the forum. I commonly use Firefox for more sensitive or secure stuff like banking.

Cheers

You seem to be knowledgeable at the ip layer maybe we could help Danny out if we put our heads together.
I did some looking into this a while ago, but I have not had a problem since.
The problem I saw was that the certificate was only being served if you went to the root directory.

Cheers

Mewgaf and all,

Been trying to post but timeouts everytime...

I work in the IT Department but for the webservers, we have dedicated guys for that.
As the others mentioned, could be Tel$tra routing or similar... wouldn't be the first time  :laughing7:

Could you guys use your computers and try this command in the cli.
When pasted back in this thread, we could compare.

For Mac and *Nix users:
traceroute www.ozisuzu.com.au

For Windows users:
1. In the start menu, open the "cmd" tool.
2. In the black rectangle at the prompt, type:
tracert www.ozisuzu.com.au

Nothing has changed for me. I use W10 and Chrome. I cleared the cache the other day and it made no difference.    I am also seeing the same results using an Android tablet connected to my wifi.
Interesting I'm not seeing any problem using an android phone on Telstra 4G.

Here's the results of a trace route. I did a few and all were similar.

Take 2
I disconnected the PC from my AussieBroadband HFC NBN connection and USB tethered it to my Telstra 4g phone.     Guess what?     100% connections. Delay is a couple of hundred mSec's but reliable

Here's a trace route for that connection

Richard, Danny and all,

In the same boat as Richard and the phone is also with Telstra 4G.
Using my android as a hotspot and guess what, no time outs at all.  :toothy9:

My last hop when using the fibre modem is exactly the same at 142.72.204.7
We need a couple more tracert outputs from those that have reported being affected.

The traceroute from when I'm connected to the phone and no timeouts...the last hop is 148.72.204.1.

Mark,

I think you could be onto something here.
When I select "Show unread posts since last visit" I have two different outcomes depending on how I'm connected to the web.

1. If connected via the Tel$tra 4 G, I see nothing has been unread. Meaning There isn't a list of unseen topics.
2. If connected via fibre, I now see a list of topics that are unread, (that's if the page hasn't timed out...)

Could you please posts your tracert output?
Thanks.

Danny, Looking at all the tracert's from users and looking at my own, I suspect it may actually be hosted in Singapore instead of in the US, which I imagine for the most part would be remarkably better due to their geographical location with us.
Looking at the hops, us in the eastern states seem to be hopping over to Perth and out one of the cables their to Singapore instead of out of the Sydney based cables to the US.
I connected to my works VPN in the US, and from their the tracert jumped around the US a bit before going out to Singapore as well.

Ill get in touch with them and see if there is something that can be done. It may be time that we have out grown our current arrangement and we need to move onto a better arrangement.
It may also be because there are so many people working at home or something along those lines, as we are on a US based server.

If I lock the packet size to for example to 1300 and 1500, the losses are the same...
1. icmp:  /usr/sbin/mtr -c 100 -w www.ozisuzu.com.au
2. tcp:  /usr/sbin/mtr -c 100 --tcp --port 443 -w www.ozisuzu.com.au
3. udp:  /usr/sbin/mtr -c 100 --udp --port 443 -w www.ozisuzu.com.au

Obviously I have no idea what I am looking at with these tests, do they conclusively show that the issue is at our hosts end?

If I show them these tracerts will they be able to see what the problem is?

Thanks very much for taking the time to help with this gents.

Ok So I just spent a considerable amount of time on the phone with godaddy tech support and they had several people look at these traceroutes (they had to escalate it through the various experts in each field!)

They tell me that it is a ISP issue.

They said all the servers between starting the test until it actually gets to godaddy is an ISP issue, none of that controlled by godaddy.
He said looking at the results, the issue is starting right out of the gate and escalates from there.

Again, I am no expert here, I can only say what they told me.

Can any of the people who know a bit about this sort thing confirm or deny that this information is correct??

Danny,   In my experience a service provider will always blame someone upstream/downstream from them first up, regardless of the product.
I'm not an IT expert but I question why users on some ISP's are working OK and others aren't.
Is it an accumulation of delays starting from the  connection to the ISP and being compunded all along the chain causing a timeout?    From what I could understand from the tracert's, different ISP's use significantly different routes, hence different delays, but could it be  they all may be close to the verge of timing  out ?
I understand your position not being able to argue at a technical level. Hopefully someone can give you some more detail /information to put to Godaddy.

Guys,

You can run the test too.
Having someone at the server end to help diagnose is very helpful.

Just make sure that you have an antivirus to scan anything you download from the net.

No there has been nothing done at this end as I am not sure what I can do!!

I am hoping the IT people on here can offer some more advise based on what the server experts told me?

The really odd this is, I have never had a connection issue getting on this site. My internet at home is super slow at times at the moment, so bad in fact that I have to tether my phone on 4g to get connection to some sites....but never this one.

I just did another tracert and it looks a bit different to one I did on Sunday. Not so may timeouts

No I don't think so. At my end there is currently a noticeable delay of about 5-10 secs accessing the site, and 1-3 second delay loading pages say 50% of the time. The other 50% is slick and fast - instant.

The "problem" is still there, though it's one I can easily live with.

Im still trying to ascertain if the problem is at our end and hence I should be able to rectify it or if it is brought about due to the overload on ISP's at the moment??

No idea Danny. All I can say is that there are no internet overload issues at my end, with iiNet as my ISP.

My concern is that the issue may be out of our hands.

If you look at the tracerts it appears as though our ISP's are bouncing us all over the place before we reach the godaddy servers.
And in most instances the issue appears to start straight away at the very first hops and continues to escalate all the way until it gets to our servers.

So I dont think there is a thing we can do about the issue at this stage in time as we have zero control over how many or where the hops are between our homes and our server. And right at the moment there could be and evidence is showing, there is overload everywhere.

Or am I reading all this wrong?  :laughing7:

I can put us on a different server but I dont want to go through the trouble to do so if the issue is going to be exactly the same.

1. My concern is that the issue may be out of our hands.

2. If you look at the tracerts it appears as though our ISP's are bouncing us all over the place before we reach the godaddy servers.
3. And in most instances the issue appears to start straight away at the very first hops and continues to escalate all the way until it gets to our servers.

4. So I dont think there is a thing we can do about the issue at this stage in time as we have zero control over how many or where the hops are between our homes and our server. And right at the moment there could be and evidence is showing, there is overload everywhere.

5. Or am I reading all this wrong?  :laughing7:

6. I can put us on a different server but I dont want to go through the trouble to do so if the issue is going to be exactly the same.

1. Agreed...most likely situation.

2. I thought that was the way the internet worked anyway.

3. Can't comment as I do not have the knowledge to interpret the tracerts.

4. You are possibly right...(that's a numpty comment, not a professional one)

5. Probably not. You are better at this stuff than many of us. How about a call to Binary Man?

6. My gut feel is to hold off from radical action, and see how the situation continues to develop. We don't want to be spending too much time or money trying to resolve something that is a marginal issue. (For the people that time-out a lot, I appreciate it might not be so marginal.)

Question: How many users are regularly affected by time-outs?
Title: Re: Connection issues with the www.ozisuzu.com.au web server
Post by: yvesjv on Mar 25, 2020, 02:16:25 PM
I'm still affected by the random timeouts... doh.

It's a tough one, but i would suggest it's a routing issue at their end and the right level of support to investigate would be their Level 3 engineers.
It may take a lot of arguing with their Level 1 phone line support to escalate the ticket....

How much would it cost to relocate the www.ozisuzu.com.au server/database/dcerts/domain/etc to aws or similar?
I'd buy a few items to support that.

In my case it's improved from aroun 15% success rate up until yesterday  to 100% success rate today.

I read that streaming outlets like netflix etc have increased their compression to save bandwidth. That may have an overall effect on the internet generally.  Dunno

Post by: DannyG on Mar 25, 2020, 03:45:05 PM
Thanks for the info and generous offers of financial help (we have had a few offers privately) however it is not about the cost.

Sure I dont want to be outlaying massive amounts of money for a dedicated Australian server if it is not nescasary, so in that way it is about money but I am prepared to cross that bridge when we come to it.

I do understand that there will come a day when we have outgrown our shared server capacity but I am not convinced this is the case with the issue we are having at the moment. Our server stats suggest we are well within our all our capacities.

I have spent a fair amount of time researching the current situation in regards to the world being home and using massive amounts of bandwidth, and connection issues and/or slow downs are very common at the moment, world wide......or at least in countries with poor internet ;)

So I think the best approach at this stage is to ride it out for a while. I am hoping those that are effected are not effected to the point where it is so unbearable they leave us.

I genuinely do apologise for the inconvenience. I will keep pestering godaddy in the back ground and see if they are able to monitor things at their end and ultimately help us out, but I am not holding out a lot of hope.

When I'm out of hospital and not sleeping 23 hrs a day. I'll  have a good  look into it.
Everybody will have a different trace route to the web server.
If there are routing problems inside godaddy we can raise this and get them to check.
If there are routing problems with an isp we could get godaddy to raise it with the carrier as it will effect all traffic on that trunk.
When I looked at it it was something totally different.
When I feel up to it I'll do some research.
Sorry that's the best I can offer at the moment.
If you wish to reach out and contact me, you are most welcome.

These guys like messing with their routing for whatever reason.

Not trying to be mean here but imho upgrading from Xmpbs to Ymbps doesn't mean it should improve the connection to a server that's beyond our control within an overseas network infrastructure.
And if it is over the NBN, just hope your ISP has purchased enough bandwidth for your internet pipe for it is shared with everyone who has signed up with your ISP within your whole region.

I have a suspicion they have web caching frontend(s) that could be fast delivering the web caches depending on which ISP IP range the request is coming from. To prove/disprove that theory is another story...

A refresh saw the the page load properly so its obviously a bit hit and miss.

What I still need confirmed is who dictates all the hops from our houses to the hosts servers?

Is it our ISP's or is it the host? The issue starts at the very first hops in 90% of tests.

So I couldnt get my reply above to work...timed out.

Couldnt refresh the page, just timed out.

I disconnected my computer from our home wifi (telstra wireless NBN) and hot spotted my phone (telstra 4g) and bang it worked perfect.

So as an experiment I went back to home wifi......time out.........back to 4g.....perfect.........back to home wifi.....time out.......you get the picture.

Yet other websites loaded ok on the home wifi network, but ours wouldnt.

So I can only speak from my end but clearly the server is working fine, and my ISP is the issue in this instance.
I would almost certainly blame the fact that so many people are at home.

Ill ring telstra when i get time, but I am not looking forward to it  :p

Just checked it again on the NBN and no load, just timing out.

Fine on 4g.

I have to start work now so I cant mess around with my NBN box or modem but clearly there is something wrong straight from my local NBN tower at the moment.

Odd that every other website I visit is loading ok on NBN. Although I did notice yesterday that one my regulars timed out a couple of times.

Given that most of us are experiencing similar issues, I wouldn't think that your problem is a localised one. I would assume your modem, NBN box and local infrastructure is sound.

When you say 'their' do you mean your ISP?

BGP routing from service providers connection to the Internet.

BGP is a routing protocol that the Internet uses. Service providers (and large organisations) will implement it at the router that connects to the Internet. BGP will dynamically determine the best/most reliable path to the destination host.

Also, I'm on the forum several times a day and I have not had a problem. I would have thought if it was at the server end I would have experienced it at least once. But I could be just lucky!

No, I meant them.

After the packets hopped from 148.72.204.1, notice how the next hops are all 10.242.0.'some-number' until finally reaching the shared server at 166.62.6.79.
These ip addresses starting with 10. are ip addresses that are meant to only be used inside your network and un-routable on the internet (www). We drop all these packets by default on our internet firewalls.
There are other common IP addresses that are also un-routable, most commonly known starts  with 176. and 192.

Ian is right with these guys using external BGP, it is detected as the uniquely assigned number being 26496. This webpage shows Godaddy has direct connectivity with Telstra https://bgpview.io/asn/26496#peers-v4
It would be a wild guess towards what they are using for IGP... don't want to know either. :evil6:

For some reason, the Linux tool I use to check on them traces the path to the shared server and reports on all the hops taken to reach it.

The connectivity is good for me at the moment and sure hope it doesn't turn into another yoyo again.
