Title: Budget Direct insurance renewal
Post by: ajm on Jan 23, 2023, 04:38:17 PM
Just opened the insurance renewal on the 2014 MUX. 50% increase in the premium. According to BD, it could be because of the overall insurance environment and might not be related to our personal circumstances. These haven't changed, BTW.  There's more to whinge about but my one finger is already sore from corresponding with them about it.

Interestingly, other insurers don't seem to have risen that much. Have only looked at comparison sites so far so this may change

Bugger.

We call all our insurance renewals each year and argue the increase, and we get a reduction each time. Still more than last year, but less than what they're asking.

Honestly, so far (fingers crossed), I haven't had any big hikes with Club4x4 from the original to the renewal, and I've added extras from mods to the policy. Now the missus RACV last renewal, they tried to increase it about 50% and she argued with them, told them she was leaving them, and they dropped the increase about 30% or more.

Fight tooth and nail with them and don't take the dribble they try and feed you over the phone.

Standard procedure these days. Each year we call up for each car when the renewal comes. It's a pain but we usually get some joy. This time, they asked about increasing the excess to reduce the premium. Sure, says I but first you have to explain to me exactly what is behind the 50% increase. Lots of very general ideas put forward about the state of the market and its impacts.  I am not so sure so will ring around tomorrow to see if it's the same everywhere.

Interestingly, the guy asked how many kms we do annually and provided several bands eg 0 - 5000, 5000 - 10000, 10000 - 15000. I answered that we do about 25k kms pa. He had trouble believing it was a family vehicle and not commercial. Such a palaver.

Standard practice for all insurance renewals. Challenge them to provide precise reasons and calculations to back up their demands. Threaten to leave. Or actually leave, if you can get the price you want elsewhere. Ratings travel with the driver, so if you are a rating 1 with xyz insurance, you will still be rating 1 at the next.

Interesting result from DGA. $1700 (incl $55 broker fee). The info sent with the quote is for CGU. who is your underwriter?

Over 6.5 years of ownership my annual premium for NRMA comprehensive cover has averaged $585. I was outraged last year when the premium went up about 8% to $673. Agreed value went up to $42700.

It's a case of comparing apples and oranges I think.

Insurance could be defined as: Selecting an entity with lots of money. Making a bet with them that something will happen. Placing your money in their hands before the bet starts. Then doing everything possible within your means to loose the very bet that you made.

OR.......

You just never know what's around the next corner ......

A lot of very clever people have insurance ......... for good reason.

And your "definition" did make me smile, as intended. :)
