Just found out that if someone has an EV, there is cost for charging that is taken by vicroads.
At 2.4 cent/km, see attached.
Heard NSW wants your KMs so they do the same.
Are the states now finding a new way to tax road usage??

Being that its a commonwealth requirement, I would say all states will be charging this.

Seems fair. Still a lot cheaper than the Excise on diesel.

F*** me... are we paying 42.3c per litre? Really? Damn.
So if we get on average 9.5lts/100, we get roughly 10.5km/lt, so roughly 4.02c per km. Damn!

When sufficient people convert to EV's no doubt the EV road excise will rise to compensate the government for the loss of fuel excise!

I would guess a combination of contractors cutting corners, mismanagement, having to spend the budget on something cheap, etc...
I remember the M1 from Vic always having roadworks, never ending... visited in December for a wedding and yep, still ongoing.

Money collected from fuel excise goes into the Federal Government general revenue rather than a specific roading fund.
Some recent govt figures show they expect to collect $49.3b over the next four years and spend $46.8b on roads in the same period.
The fuel excise will continue to rise as the govt demands more fuel efficient vehicles be sold.
Less fuel used = less revenue = raise the tax to maintain the revenue.

You have them too? I thought it was just NSW. The roads are are bad as I've ever seen them this past 12 months. The Great Western and Mid Western highways are terrible and I won't start on the smaller country roads with logging trucks on them. Some of these roads in my area have gone back to dirt.

We need to shrink the grubberment and lessen the taxes
But we have more chance of holding back the tide with a broom.
The grubberment parasites have us all by our petrol tanks.

I have traveled all over the world (for my job) and driven or have been driven on many roads in many countries.
I can say, with fear of contradiction, that Australian roads in general are some of the worst in any civilized country on earth.
They have skinnier lanes, poor road surfaces, and are generally very poorly made.
Some third world countries even have better roads.
And what makes it even more annoying is the absolute ridiculous time it takes to make a road in Australia.
In the time it took to upgrade a few kilometres on the M1 on the Central Coast, hundreds of Kilometers were put down in China on one stretch of road where I was travelling. Better roads too.
I think it comes down to just how much the "Contractors" can charge and how much "Graft" they have to pass over to the public servants who secure their services.
I watched this joke of an "upgrade" for years, machinery that was just sitting there rusting for nearly 2 years without moving, that we were being charged for because it was "on site"
Dirt and road base moved from one place to another and back several dozen times (to look busy).
And less than 12 months after it was opened potholes and damage resulting in serious damage to vehicles formed.
Before the road was even opened it was breaking up, requiring resurfacing several times.
In the US and UK when they make a road its good for many years, I guess 12 months is OK for a backward colony like Australia.
