Title: Old iPhone Charging
Post by: Jonesy on Jun 22, 2017, 03:23:49 PM
Hi Troops

My wife an I have two old iPhone 4s's (no criticisms please as our priority is our MU-X and not keeping up with the Joneses and their new phones!)

The only difference between the 2 is hers is a black 16GB model whereas mine is a white 32GB model.

My phone will only charge when connected to a computer/laptop & and in the USB port in the MU-X but not any of our three wall chargers, while the wife's model will charge anywhere.

I've played around swapping cables and I can't get mine to charge from the wall.

Any suggestions as to why this might be the case?

Nothing wrong with a 4S Jonesy. I've only just replaced mine with an iPhone SE. Can't beat the "old" look.

Cheers

Cheers Martin

I asked the same question on a camping Facebook forum i'm on, and only got the usual Apple bashing and Android argument which didn't address the question.

Brand and age of phone not important to me so long as it works.

Have a safe upcoming weekend

I charge my iPhone using one of the dual USB outlets as below, worked on my old 4S and now the 5S

Hey Jonesy,

1. Are you using Apple original wall charger, or is it a 3rd party one?
2. Are you using Apple original usb charger cables or 3rd party?
3. What iOS version is running on your 4S, compared to your wife's 4S?

There is no difference in the power charging requirement between a 4S 16gb and 32gb model.

4. Is your wife turning the power point on and you're not?

I find that any USB lead plugged into any USB power supply works for me. I normally replace the short leads with 2-3M leads that I get from eBay.

Yes it shouldn't matter, but we are trying to understand Jonesy's setup in order to assist.

A PC usb port, or the dual USB ports you buy for the car typically provide 500mA. The genuine iPhone charger, specifically the 4S, provides 1A which is why the phones charge faster when connected to the wall outlet.

I've had issues with cables going bad, wall chargers going bad, and software glitches.

So Jonesy, check your iOS versions are the same or are up to date with the latest version. Make sure you have switched your phone off and back on. Check the wall charger for any dirt / rust in it if you can, and the same for your iPhone charger port.

At this point I'd say it's something to do with your iPhone's charger port, dust/lint or rust in there. If you have a small brush and a can of compressed air, give it a right royal cleaning out!

Yes at present all charges and cables are apple
Yes powerpoint is turned on!
Yes both phones are running same iOS 9.3.5 as 4s no longer supported for newer updates

Thanks to everyone for your comments and banter  :notworthy:

Guess it is just one of those unexplained things in life.

BMux comment of only 500mA at PC is bizarre so maybe phone can no longer accept higher ampage

I've cleaned and restarted twice the device

As mentioned it still works perfectly for my needs just weird why it is selective where it will charge

Have a good night fellow Isuzuers and be safe going your own way

Have you switched the phone off and on since this problem started?

You could try back up the phone with iTunes, then reset it to factory defaults, and restore. Just in case it's a software issue?

You could also buy a new battery and change it, perhaps that is the issue:

They are good phones, I had my 4S for close to 6 years before I changed the battery and gave it to a family member, and got the new 7.

I've always just used Genuine Apple cables - I still have a working iPhone 4 and iPhone 5 ( use em as iPods)
I've found the cheaper aftermarket ones ya just don't know what ya getting and how long they will work for
