Title: Chemo. Has anyone else in this gone through this?
Post by: mewgaf on Feb 17, 2020, 10:36:02 PM
Hi all
I'm  currently going through chemotherapy, im currently half way through treatment.
What I'd be interested in is have other people in this group also gone through chemo and how long after the treatments did you start to come good again?
At this point I was planning to be travelling, but at the moment sleeping is taking up most of my time.
Thanks
Cheers
Mark

Hey Mark,

I'm really sorry to hear that. I haven't been through it myself, but I nursed my wife through successive chemo treatments over the course of 14 months a few years ago. My understanding is that every treatment is different and tailored for the circumstances of the patient. And every patient can respond differently. So it's a hard question to answer.

After each course of chemo my wife would come good about week or two after her last treatment. By good I mean that she was well enough to potter around the house, indulge herself in her favourite crafts, and maybe go out for a bit of shopping or a coffee. But there was always a residual malaise or lethargy that prevented her from travelling or being adventurous. She never strayed far from the cancer ward.

I know this is probably of no help to you, but happy to chat about it. Best wishes mate, and I trust that you recover well and quickly enough so that you can satisfy your wanderlust.

Where are you travelling to?

Cheers
Russ

Thanks for your wishes Russ.
I plan to beat this.
As you say, what I hear everybody does react differently to this treatment.  (depending upon a number of things. Cancer cells divide in 5 ways) There are 5 basic chemotherapy drugs that stop the cancer cells from dividing. The amount of the drug given and the time period between doses.
The big problem is that these drugs that stop the cancer cells from dividing also stop good cells from dividing. Like white blood cells and the list goes on.
At the moment body wants to sleep, but food  makes you really nauseated or straight to the loo. Tomorrow could be different Walking from bedroom to lounge room seems hard work. 10 minutes later I break out into sweats but body temp is 34 degrees.
I know I need to try to keep some body motion going as im aware of muscle loss.
I here people taking 1 year after treatment to get over chemo, I can see why.

Enough of this.
Trips/places I would like to do.
Back through Flinders rangers
up centre to kakadu
Kimberley

I think I will plan short and start with 1-2 month to start with.
I still need a number of core things done to my mux before going.

In my twenties I travelled all around Aust in a 1967 Valiant Wagon and bought the mux to see whats changed.

Cheers
Mark

Sorry to hear Mate, I didn't need chemo or radio. From 3 different DR's my operation in Aug 2019 seems to be successful.

That's funny, in 1973 I was window shopping for my first car and fell in love with a 1966 or 67 VC Valiant Regal sedan with a V8. It was just beyond the $$ I had, and I ended up buying a mate's green EH sedan with 7" rims and ER70H14 rubber. I had to flare the guards to fit the wheels. The 149 blew up pretty quickly, so I transplanted a 186 engine with extractors out of an HR into it. I kept the 149 carby on it, and it used to get 33 mpg on a trip. One Christmas I drove it from Canberra to Cairns in just over 24 hours surviving on hamburgers and beer as you did back then.

I had huge difficulty motivating my wife to even go for a short walk with me. She suffered similar effects to those you describe. Exercise is so important but so difficult. All she wanted to do was sit, sleep and cuddle the kids.

Take care Mark.

I think this might be the slant 6.

This is the V8.

I sold my vc wagon just last year. I had it in the garage for agage looking for somebody that collects them, anyway a guy i know bought it. Strangely it still brings a tear to the eye. I remember having a torana a9x and a similar trip from camberra  to cairns.  It was snowing in Canberra and got into my grandparents in Brisbane in the afternoon and stayed the night than left Brisbane and hit cairns that arvo. I remember cairns having a jetty and about 6 shops. My things have changed.
No fuel on Sundays no fuel after dark, pubs shut at 12 on Sundays 20c beers and if I hunt up my fuel log books for my cars I  could find fuel prices and mpg for each trip.
Should make an effort and get out of bed and go get warm and watch a movie :)

Cheers

Mark, sorry to hear what you are going through. Mate you probably have already figured this stuff out but when in public stay right away from anyone who coughs or sneezes. Try not to touch any door handles(a bit hard I know), railings and handles. If your temperature goes up consult your doctor. And if you start feeling unwell and think it’s a bit more serious than normal(for you) Don’t feel bad about calling an Ambulance. You are unwell and you need some support and reassurance. Hope you get through it ASAP.
Cheers Shane

Hi thanks
Friday did another chemo session, one to go yay. Results looking good, another 6-7 months of treatments boo.

Looking for a van or really a black out box with a bed that will go anywhere that is really light. I have seen the bruder exp-4 and like it but expensive. I'm thinking of making something and have been looking at areo effective shapes and drag of towing. So if I  go down this path I will get somebody to manufacture a chassis to my specs and get either a laser cut body to my spec and put it togther or just get body panels and cut it myself. Goal weight around 750kg. Suspension travel 12" self levelling air bag.

This winter I plan to stay up on the Sunshine Coast to see if I can get some form of fitness back
I have started mapping out a first trip to the Kimberly which rough looks like this

WA
Places to see
EAST KIMBERLEY’S ZEBEDEE SPRINGS
MACMICKING POOL
EMMA GORGE
SECRET POOLS
SWIM BEACH

Trip route (rough)
Melbourne
Broken Hill
Yunta
Martins well
Arkapena
Wilpena
Arkaroola
Paralana Hot Springs
Marree
(oonadatta track)
 http://traveloutbackaustralia.com/oodnadatta-track.html/
Dalhousie springs. Camp at three o clock creek or Purnie Bore

Finkel (don't go near June 5-8 2020) finkel desert races

Alice springs

Katherine

Kununrra

Nice,

Be careful at Marree, William Creek and Oodnadatta... I pumped bad fuel from one of those.
Taught me a lesson and now I have a pre-fuel filter inline.

That is a nice trip  :cup:

Thanks for that I have already installed a fuel pre filter kit.
Spare kit that I plan on taking (which I have in all cars) full set of hoses, fan belt, both fuel filters.

Mewgaf

Sorry to hear about the chemo, but remember it isn't a DEATH sentence.

My mother in law, at 63 years of age, was diagnosed with cancer.
She had the necessary operations to remove the cancer, but as you know, chemo is required to stop the spread.

12 years later, she is still going strong.
She had another bout about 2 years ago, but all she had was chemo and again she came good.

Now, the chemo.
It's terrible to see, much worse for those undergoing it.
But this insidious desease can be beaten.

Keep fighting mate
Never give in
Keep up the exercise, and if thou can access the hemp scheme, it works wonders.
The lady up the street from us is on it and she has put on weight and seems much better.

All the best mate.

Hi Mark,
I Hope things are improving for you.
What type and stage of cancer is it, and what protcol do they have you on?

Hi Tremayne
It's prostate cancer which has metastasized through most of my right hand side and into the pelvis.
I know I will beat this.
Currently I'm going through chemotherapy with 6 sessions of 150ml docetaxel every 3 weeks. I have one more to go yea.
With this is also zoladex 10.8mg implant which I'll be on for another 9-12 months. (lots of side effects).
The psa levels are going down, so the chemo is doing its job. I have asked for a scan at the end of the chemo for a base line.
I am surprised at how much the chemo takes out of you. With days being unable to walk more than 10m and sleeping 18-23 hrs a day.
But I get a couple of good days between the sessions and I can get out into the bush for a quite day, and I say any day out of bed/house is a good day.

So every male on this forum over 35 should go to their doctor and get a psa test (check for prostate cancer), which is a simple blood test.

Cheers
Mark

Agree 100% on the blood test advise. My father suffered prostate cancer at 70. Seen the effect it has had on his life since. I have 5 brothers and we all have blood tests regularly.

I think the back seat of that valiant has stories to tell  :evil6:

Very sound messaging from you guys about prostate cancer. Thanks for the push. :icon_salut:

Love the Valiant. It looks straight and used, albeit with a small dent or three. A good dooer-upper for somebody. Was it a 225 cu in? Auto or manual? Did they still have the push button autos in this model?

I love the old-world practicality of steel bumper bars. It's the main reason I bought an OEM steel bull bar for the MUX. I wasn't happy with a plastic bumper bar and wanted some steel up front.

Yes it was a 225 slant 6.
I sold it to a person who is going to do it up.
I had the pleasure of driving her not so long ago on his property, brought back lots of memories and started on first turn over. This when I took this photo.
I took the original 67 plates of her and put them on the mux, so I have steel number plates. Not to mention I don't have to remember a new set rego plate numbers.
