Title: Air Compressors recommendations
Post by: georged018 on Jul 25, 2016, 10:26:43 PM
Hi all

Fairly new to 4wding and had my MUX for a few weeks now and looking at taking off-road soon.

Before I do need to purchase an air compressor. Not really sure what I should  be looking for as far as a portable air compressor goes, not looking for anything big or under bonnet as wont be going off-road every weekend but for the occasional use.

Thanks

Given the number of times that I use a compressor I got one of these - price is right and goes like the clappers and cheap.. https://www.4wdsupacentre.com.au/products/air-compressors/thumper-air-compressor.html

Dr Air Pro Flow 150 for $230 and 5 year warranty, already had a decent pressure gauge and Staun tyre deflators.Use it once a month and no issues other than accuracy of pressure gauge, which I have marked with a black niko pen for the correct inflation pressure

Air compressor review here http://www.unsealed4x4.com.au/issue017/#43

Purchased from www.Autoelec.com.au and they have an ebay store as well at the time had a bonus LED light.

Same as My Names Earl. Dr Air Pro Flow 150 purchased from Autoelec. Great unit and works a treat. I mounted mine in the back of the Dmax. Cheers!

I bought an ARB one for $250-300 about 3 years ago. Takes just over 1 min to pump a 255/65/R17 tyre from 25-40 psi.  Has been good up until last weekend where it lost pressure from leaking hose.

Last couple of 4x4"s we had the ARB compressor mounted under bonnet for the Air Lockers so that was our tyre compressor by default.....this time with the MUX we are planning less aggressive off roading so no lockers.

After researching compressors based on the amount of use it will have we purchased the Thumber 2 from the 4WD Supercentre. Really impressed with its capabilities, it's heavier than it looks too.

Been using the same ARB compressor for about 7 years (now in its 3rd 4WD). It was mounted under the bonnet in the first two, but in the Dmax is it mounted alongside the drawers (under the side wings) in the rear tub along with the aux battery.  Still going strong.

Thumper2 for me, to replace very old (25yrs) unit.
$75 plus freight ....

Unless serious Up and downing pressures while playing off road and sand.
there's no need for H/Duty units.

I do my pushbike once every coupla weeks. (55lb)
Plus two cars.2 boat trlrs and a 6x4
once a month.
Oh. And Caravans 5 wheels too.

Jeez. I need to get rid of some of them at my age.

I purchased a thumper 11 no complaints, seems to be well made and works well. I couldn't justify spending any more.

An eBay cheapie lasted 6 x 6 inflations so then I went to a unit from ABR Sidewinder.  No dramas over about 3 years now.

Best to aim for a unit with 150 l per minute or better.
