Landcruiser 300 engine failures
« on: Feb 25, 2025, 01:47:14 PM »
As expected, massive issues with the new landcruiser. Its a hot V engine

pistons overheat and seize on the bore. 0-20w oil, steel pistons blamed. Oh what a feeling!

Yeah, John called it ages ago... I've seen a few gripes from people who ask a lot of them... Wild Touring springs to mind.

If you buy the first series of something new, you are the Beta tester.  That's the way these things work.  I recall a John Cadogan video where he gave a very strong recommendation not to buy the new 300 for a while, to let them sort out the issues that will arise.

What I wonder is why he has this engine (and apparently 2 more) in his shop.  Normally, a new vehicle, under warranty, with an engine failure, would result in the dealer removing the engine, replacing it with one from the manufacturer, and then shipping the old engine back to the manufacturer for examination.  Yet he has three failures apparently.

So that leads to the possibility that there is no warranty on these 3 engines.  Why would that be, I wonder?  Have they been chipped, tuned, or otherwise modifed in some way?  How had they been used when they failed, and how good were the service histories?  He provides no detail whatsoever about any of that.

Now I am the furtherest thing from a Toyota Fanboi you would find, but there is nowhere near enough detail in this to make any determination about the cause of the failure.

i agree, would have thought Toyota would do a post mortem and sort out root cause.

Was researching yesterday, and the new emissions standards are in force, meaning 4x4 (class 2) light commercials can only produce 210gCo2/km. I checked and LC300 doesn't comply. Maybe why they have gone with 0-20W oil to meet the standard? Seems like the logical change that may cause this issue.

Luckily the dmax complies! we can keep using 15W-40 and get 500,000km !!

i wonder how the dodge ram will comply with the standards? might be the end of large trucks! or have very small motors in big trucks (boring!)

Inline sixes are the future apparently...

Business opportunity... buy as many V8s and ram 2500s as you can afford, they will be worth a packet when they are no longer produced! (as of now!)

Check out the cam lobe wear on landcruiser 300 series. Must be the 0-20 oil! Might save a drop of fuel but destroy a $30k motor

If you owned one I’d go to 15w-40! Never had an issue over 30 years of touring

This D4D Engines report on the first strip down stated that the primary problem is heat transference in the cylinder, not the grade of oil. It's a mechanical and design issue and 15W-40 won't fix it.

Wild Touring provided a fairly positive review of the GX (8 months ago), and no engine issues.

yes, looks like the 2nd ring gets hot, expands and picks up the bore.

Whats the fix?

did you see the lobe wear, that can only be due to lack of lubrication!!

Whats the fix? Nissan Patrol, Warrior FTW! And $110K  driveaway.

I did see another speculative article, where it states there is a heavier optional oil for that motor, for use under heavy conditions( ie towing) , and Toyota don't just fill it with that as standard. Cures the oil burning as well. and, to the person that said they had used 15w40 for thirty years without a problem, motors were a lot different then. I used to use it back then too, but not necessarily any good for a modern design.
We all seem to want more HP and less fuel, and the piper must be paid, and his payment will be in lack of longevity.
