Mazda CX5

Need your help.... again...

Need to replace my wifes tribute. Thinking of the CX5 - 2.5L motor, petrol. What are your thoughts?

I can get a 2nd hand one for $24K, 7l/100km, just to run to work and back. They have a conventional 6 speed auto, rather than $%^& CVTS used on Subarus.

Only thing wrong i can find is they have that bloody stop start thingy. Looks like you can just jam a cable tie into the button and it goes away.

Did you sell due to issues? Or just wanted a real 4x4.

We have had a petrol Mazda CX3 for nine years now, No problems, good fuel consumption.  I enjoy driving it - good steering and brakes and performs well.  The CX5 would have more space but the CX3 suits us as a second car.  The I-Stop can be turned off each time we drive the car but we have got used to it.  I have heard a couple of bad stories about diesel Mazdas so I would steer clear of those.

The Leader of the Opposition has had a 2016 Mazda 3 since new; very happy with it except for 2 things - the i-stop thingy which can be turned off but resets 'on' after every shutdown. We found this can be solved by not jamming foot hard on the brake while stopped. It is possible to apply just enough brake to prevent car from moving forward at stop light without triggering the dreaded i-stop. Takes a bit of practice to consistently get it right though...
The other issue is that the auto (otherwise very good) always tries to change up at fairly low revs, meaning gutless performance specially with a load on board. Easily solved by hitting the "Sport" mode button, but this quickly reverts to normal if you don't keep your foot into it. Can use the wheel mounted shift paddles which works well too. Goes satisfactory for a 2 litre if you can get it to rev ("satisfactory" as measured by a driver of a Caprice with 6.2 litre v8).
This is the third Mazda we've owned - they have all been very good overall.
Old Fart still pushing the envelope... but it remains stationery

Yes, i've heard that the diesel is no good, intakes clogging up etc, the petrol seems the way to go, and only slightly more fuel.

Thanks for the responses, now to find a nice red one! (goes faster).

Do you think the 2 litre to 2.5? The car will do 90% round town and 10% highway.

No issues, the CX3 was a great little car for the wife and I loved my X Trail but when I retired and bought a bigger caravan for longer trips I sold both cars and bought our MUX.

If you really want to hear about Mazda's the Mazda forums will provide more info than the Isuzu forum

Just bought the CX5 (3 years old), very excited (mums roundabout).

Ended up with the 2.5L Petrol AWD version. Gets 8l/100km round town.

Saved $40,000 not buying an EV (paid $25k, versus $65k). I'll put the $40k in 12% return ETFs which will easily pay for the fuel, and i keep the $40k.

Only takes 40 seconds to recharge it   :p. Simple 6 speed auto, no over priced hybrid, no electric (battery will be toast in 7 years).

Nearly all cars are worthless after 10 years (except Isuzu or Toyota of course), I'll only loose $25k, versus $65K for electric. RIP EV!

thanks for everyones advice

Just got a price for RAV4 hybid = $54,000, but they get 6l/100km.

So you save $360 in petrol over 10,000km of driving.

So it would take 80 years to recover the cost of the car (compared to CX5). Toyota oh what a feeling

Mazda, my second love (Isuzu / wife are the first!)

What turned me off Mazda was that bloody engine stopping every time I pulled up at lights.

Turned me off faster than finding an Addams apple on a new girlfriend.

I've worked out the stop/start thingy.

If you just press the brake pedal gently, it does not stop the car. You have to push down quite firmly (when stopped) to switch off the engine. Its not an issue at all.

There is also a button to turn it off, but its not necessary.

I considered buying a CX9.

But the stop start thing was a deal breaker.
I asked if they could turn off the feature and they said no.
Apparently, it would void the warranty and is illegal as its a fuel saving function.

From what I have read, it can save an Australian driver 2 or 3 liters of fuel a year.

Off topic, what oil should i use on my wifes CX5 - great car by the way!

thinking of castrol edge 10W-30. I'm a bit sceptical of thin oils (they only save a drop of fuel, but reduce motor life), just look at the new landcruiser 300 running 0-20W oil, the motors are burning rings at 20,000km!!!

maybe go 10W-40?
