Caravan Roof Resealing - Fixed!!

<< < (2/2)

maweida:
Just finished resealing the front joint of the Expanda 16 footer.

Very similar to my first post, but some improvements.

- Used a scraper that takes a safety razor blade (bunnings) to strip the flat surfaces, change blades regularly and you'll save time.

- Because there is a gap (see photos), its difficult to remove the old sealant. HACK! ended up buying a small long nose vice grip 150mm plyers from bunnings ($19) to hold the razor blade,  then used an angle grinder to grind the razor (actually an 18mm stanley knife blade) to around 3mm blade length. i couldn't get the blade to slide nicely, and realised that i had to grind the plyers (at the nose) to lower the angle slightly.

- Used 1/3 parmolive and 2/3 water in a spray bottle to finish off the surface, nice and smooth and less chance of mould etc.

- Used an ice cream container lid to shape the final bead. Just cut the lid in half, then used snippers to shape a nice radius, I'm going large beads now, as the longer the bead the more expansion the joint can tolerate.

- Used Sika 221 again, its lasted about 2 years now (my first repair), and looks like new.

Pro job, very happy!

Was thinking... again.

Since Sikaflex is paintable, i could just paint the new sealant, this way the paint can protect the sealant from UV (sun). Might last forever so i don't have to do it again!!
