Finally Got The Wheels Dirty
« on: Nov 07, 2021, 06:53:01 PM »
A week after lockdown between city and rural finished, I've finally had the chance to get out and get the wheels dirty. Did some nice tracks near Toolangi in the state forest - good mix of low and high range, a little diff lock too, super steep, some muddy bits, but all able to get a stock Dmax through with highway tyres. All dry obviously, would not have been able to do the tracks if wet.

I only drove a little, but got the missus behind the wheel for most of it, letting her get a feel for steep tracks, ruts, mud holes, so forth. She did well, didn't get bogged and she learnt a whole lot and enjoyed herself. I figure the more I do that, the more she will come with.

Top stuff.  Being out in the bush is what's it all about whether your fishing, hunting, camping, kayaking or just out 4WDing or whatever.

Get some KM3s to go on your rig and you'll be unstoppable.   ;D

Having had to use the winch 7 times on 3 jobs in the past month I am definitely feeling that the wheels are dirty  :cup: :BangHead:

Lucky duck. Can't wait to get my winch - which means I can take on tougher terrain and know I can get myself out.

We looked at some tough bits of track on the weekend and just shook them off, avoided at all costs with the stock weapon. Some of the stuff we did we wouldn't have been able to if it had rained. Steep enough that it was 1st low range with locker to get us up it with stock tyres. In all honesty, if it had rained, not sure if AT or MT would have done some of the stuff either. Probably would have been winch or needed snow chains. Mostly clay.

I always climb in low range 2nd and have been up some bloody steep climbs.  Mines manual though.  I take it yours is auto?

Yup. I had the missus doing 2nd up steep stuff, some was just really steep, it was 1st or nothing to get up. Mainly some joiner tracks between the main tracks got pretty insane.

Even good tyres can't help you sometimes.

I have along this track dozens of time, the last time was 2 months before.

But conditions change!

Nope. I turned it off as it was still running. Then it wouldn't start.

The hole had a 1m straight wall that the roo bar slammed into. I was passenger and thankfully we were going slow instead of "putting the boot into it".
